Bart Bijvelds is 37 and lives in Venhorst in Brabant. He faced health challenges at an early age when he was treated for a brain tumour. This brought with it neurological disorders, making him physically limited. Despite these challenges, Bart remains positive and enjoys his daily life and the freedom the Huka Cortes gives him.

The choice of the Huka tricycle

Through his physiotherapist, Bart came into contact with an occupational therapist, who recommended the tricycle to him. Bart chose the Huka Cortes because of its sporty look, something that fits well with his former passion for mountain biking. ‘Due to my muscular dystonia in my neck, I was experiencing more and more problems when cycling. Thanks to the Huka Cortes, I can now cycle comfortably again without many complaints.’

More mobility and independence

Switching to a tricycle has greatly enriched Bart’s life. With the stable three-wheel design, he no longer has to balance, which makes getting on and off the bike much safer for him. ‘I now take the bike faster than the car, especially for short distances. It gives me a sense of independence that I missed for a long time.’

Although Bart did not encounter any major challenges in getting used to the tricycle, there was a threshold of embarrassment. ‘I had to get over the initial embarrassment. Now I fully enjoy the freedom the bike gives me, even if I did almost topple over sometimes by going too enthusiastically on a roundabout.’

Daily activities with the Cortes

Bart uses his bike for everything from shopping to extended cycling holidays. He enjoys cycling through the local forests and has even climbed the Grand Ballon in the French Vosges in 2022 on his bike. ‘The bike has really enriched my life, and I feel free to go wherever I want.’

Comfort and convenient adjustments

For Bart, the Huka Cortes’ short turning radius is a big advantage, especially on narrow cycle paths. He has also added an extra battery and a luggage rack with an iron basket to his bike, so he is always ready for longer rides. ‘I also added a cushion for extra seating comfort,’ he adds smiling.

Social impact of the bicycle

The tricycle has not only increased Bart’s mobility but also enriched his social life. ‘I now visit friends and family more easily or take a ride with others. The bike not only takes me somewhere, but also brings me closer to the people around me.’

For Bart, cycling means freedom, something that other forms of exercise do not offer him. ‘When cycling, I can choose whether to turn left or right, without thinking about my limitations. That’s something walking doesn’t offer me, given my parkinson’s.’
